PROLOGUE
This book was based on the writer's Doctor of Ministry
project while enrolled in Southwestern Baptist Theological
Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. The name of the project was
entitled, THE RAISING OF INDIVIDUAL SELF-ESTEEM BY ESTAB-
LISHING CHRISTIAN IDENTITY IN THE MATRIX OF GROUP DYNAMICS.
The writer was concurrently teaching at Central Bible
College, Springfield, Missouri. It was here at Central Bible
College that the project was executed.
The writer was convinced that low self-esteem was a
problem that needed addressing in his denomination and also
among other Christian groups. Objective psychological test-
ing confirmed this.
The writer presented biblical Christian identity to a
group of ten students and helped them internalize biblical
principles, using group dynamics.
The basic idea came from Kenneth Hagin. [Kenneth E.
Hagin, IN HIM (Tulsa: Kenneth E. Hagin Evangelistic
Association, 1975). Hagin's ideas inspired much of the
content of this book]. While teaching at International
Bible College in San Antonio, students were assigned to read
the New Testament and glean scriptures that describe who the
believer is and what he has in Christ. The result after
two editions is the list of 620 scriptures found in
Appendix A. These scriptures, along with some others, form
the foundation of this project. Some key topics were
formally presented in the group sessions, whereas all the
scriptures were assigned for reading and meditation.
An experimental group of ten was chosen from volunteers
on a "first come--first served" basis. There were four men
and six women, which included two married couples. A control
group of ten was also chosen from volunteers. Both groups
took pretests and posttests for self-esteem. THE COOPERSMITH
SELF-ESTEEM INVENTORY, FORM C was chosen for group testing.
In order to verify the self-esteem needs of Central
Bible College students, a 10 percent sampling was tested in
the area of self-esteem and personal adjustment. The first
part of the CALIFORNIA TEST OF PERSONALITY (PERSONAL ADJUST-
MENT) was used for the sampling. The mean for personal
adjustment was 64.648, a percentile of 35 in the Secondary
Series. The 1B scale (Sense of Personal Worth) mean was
10.5, a percentile of 25 on the Secondary Series of the
CALIFORNIA TEST OF PERSONALITY. [Louis P. Thorpe, Willis W.
Clark, and Ernest W. Tiegs, MANUAL: CALIFORNIA TEST OF
PERSONALITY (Monterey, CA: California Test Bureau/McGraw-
Hill Book Co., 1953), pp. 27, 31]. Mrs. Ruth Kaunley, As-
sistant Professor in Counseling and Guidance was was most
helpful in the testing.
Twelve meetings were held with the experimental group.
Ten of those meetings majored in biblical instruction. The
project was successful. Appendix B gives particulars on the
results for the experimental group. The instrument used for
both pretesting and posttesting was the COOPERSMITH SELF-
ESTEEM INVENTORY, FORM C. After completing the project, the
students' self-esteem was raised an average of 22 percent!
Dr. William "Budd" Smith, Southwestern Baptist Theo-
logical Seminary, served as the Faculty Supervisor. Dr.
Elwood Jensen, International Bible College, served as Field
Supervisor. The writer is grateful for their help and sup-
port.
